2012 DRC Echezeaux Grand Cru
Domaine de la Romane-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy’s best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romane, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Cte d’Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romane-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world.
Not as consistently well-regarded as its “grander” neighbor, Grands-Echzeaux, the considerably larger Grand Cru Echzeaux still boasts a range of top-tier producers with plots on its land.
Echezeaux is a grand cru vineyard covering the slopes above the Clos de Vougeot vineyard in the Flagey-Echzeaux commune of Burgundy’s Cte de Nuits. Like its famous neighbor, it is considerably larger than most grand cru vineyards, spanning nearly 40 hectares (100 acres) of land.
Echezeaux wines, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, are on the full-bodied end of the Burgundy spectrum, showing red fruit as well as spice and undergrowth characters.

I adored the 2012 Echzeaux Grand Cru from barrel and I adore it from bottle. Picked on September 29-30 at 22 hectoliters per hectare, those explosive aromatics from barrel are replicated here with bright red cherries, kirsch and rose petals, all beautifully defined and imbued with a sense of exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, a dash of white pepper on the tip of the tongue and a beautifully poised, elegant finish. This is an Echzeaux determined to be above its station. Wonderful. 1,057 cases produced.
